Inference is a skill that students are asked to practice while reading for different purposes. This guide will help students understand how inference skills help them to become more thoughtful as they interact with the reading process. Figure 19 (see below) is a major portion of our state curriculum and requirement in teaching Language Arts and our library will help support students as they practice reading skills by listening, reading, creating, and collaborating.

When making inferences, a reader will use the information they already know based on background knowledge gained from various sources and life experiences. This is called "schema". After they engage with the schema that connects to the text they are reading, they use evidence or support to make an inference. Inferences have just enough proof from the story to come to an appropriate conclusion.
